Scam
the sales associate from Mayan Palace, now in days are willing to put under a lot of pressure their potential members, and lie about the contract. the sale associate should be able to explain you about your 5day period to cancel your membership with FULL refund of your money already given to the resort.
here is another blacklist with more complaints about Grand Mayan, do not get stuck with a membership you dont want.

Scam
We went to the Grand Mayan for Christmas 2011 for my father's 80th birthday. We attended the timeshare presentation so we could get a golf discount. The 90-minute presentation became almost 6 hours long... high pressure. What a waste of a day... my husband and I said "no way" so the salesman started to put the pressure on my dad... when the Mayan policy is to target people under 75 years old, why would he pick on my 80 year old dad? The salesman promised things that he couldn't deliver on and then, when called on it, a different salesman cancelled the agreement and said he would refund my father's deposit. Meanwhile, they charged my dad's credit card for the outstanding balance. We sent a demand letter to the company and contacted the fraud department of the credit card company. Three months later we have finally recouped the money... but NOT from Grupo Mayan... from VISA. These people are horrible liars... BEWARE!
And the golf course sucks... so don't fall for the golf discount!

Mayan Palace Timeshare Scam
I was convinced by Mayan Palace timeshare salespeople that an upgrade to my timeshare from Mayan Palace to Mayan Place Regency would make it easier to rent and more saleable. I entered into a contract for $6,720.00 to complete this upgrade. I have since learned that this upgrade is doing nothing for me as I try to sell and rent the unit. The list of benefits is this:Elite Reservations rental program (which I had available before),RCI enhanced pkg, certificates for cruise and vacation discounts, 50% off golf green fees (previously it was 20%), senior certificare (I'm NOT a senior), no mandatory maintenance fees after 5 years if I don't use the property?? Lots of free extra benefits and vacation bonuses but nothing tangible. I owe a cash out of $4,368.00. I wonder what the consideration of this contract is? I have all the paperwork and had to email the sales office to get a list of benefits I paid for. This is a good article about Mayan Palace:
