Do they really care about the worker
It is bad. Retail is abhorrent management... Put your lights on. Don't be expected to be given something - start working towards a situation that makes you in charge. You are.

No pleasure to work for
I agree 100 percent too. class action lawsuit, count me in. I have already received discrimination and sexual harassment (which was admitted to in writing by my assistant manager not once but twice). Let's do it! Anyone find anything on the internet ...yet?

Do they really care about the worker
I worked for publix for 4 years. I was treated on the outside nicely, however on the inside that was not the case. I was only making 10 dollars and hours, could pay bills mortgage or support my family and children had SVP and VP tell me how much they make, their stock options etc.. .I was promised full-time for 4 years that never happened I got behind in a lot of debt was still promised everything under the sun, then I pulled the cards and said "I thought this was a great place to work.
I made a few calls did some research and now I am back in the game, I make more then a store manager, regional manager and district manager. My average gross is 7800 a week, Publix wasnt even paying me 300 a week. Screw Publix, they need to have a union come in a truly bust there ***** (you fill in the expletive)
So screw Publix, they are cheap and if you are not black, female and haitian you will nopt make it., Sorry Mr.Crenshaw, I know you are reading this. You messed with the wrong person, very close friends of mine have some very very very close reliable friends in the nice White building in DC, want to see what politics does. Either you bring in a union, up the wages to national standards (starts at 17.50 an hour) you you are HOSED.

Do they really care about the worker
Hey,
It's me again. Yea...Ok here it goes, This is what Publix calls "associate appreciation" day. I go in for 5 am everyday. So this one morning, I go in and start getting things rolling in the bakery. Next thing I know, the store manager is verbally abusing my assistant manager and then insists that we have all of our bread for the day out on the shelves (baked, cooled and bagged) by 7:00 am (in less than an hour) which is next to impossible unless, we break all the rules and under proof/bake everything, and put out way too hot bread on the shelf. He then looks us over and the kitchen, makes sure we pick up everything extra-well and that we look good. Then he rushes off to do the same thing to all the other departments and employees. I then found out that this was because it was "associate appreciation day". Ha! By the time he got done harassing us and us getting ready (working three times faster and harder) for this special visitor to look us over and shake our hands telling us that he "appreciates us", we were a wreck inside and covered in sweat. I ran around the other side of the bakery picking up stuff and then tried to hide when the guy came. I felt like I looked terrible and was in no mood to "kiss ass" to make this abusive store manager look good. But, the guy saw me race around the corner and said "I see you trying to hide, now let me shake your hand." I gave in and looked up into his eyes to shake his hand. He was scary looking to top it off. That day the store manager never put any snacks in the break room for us, nor provide any extra nice things like an extra 15 min break (we never get to take), or fresh coffee or cokes. In fact, he just disappeared for the rest of day after that. So it really was "kiss and appreciate the manager's ass day" and not about the associate. It must be because we are called ASS-ociates. I found out that I wasn't the only employee to run and hide, others did too. Amazing. The new name for this day is "ASS appreciation day". The remainder of the word is pronounced " O-shi-t" . That about sums it up. Yep.

Awful, awful, awful
I purchased 4 beef tenderloin steaks for $39.12. I was very disappointed that the muscle was not removed. Don't the meat cutters know how to trim meat. I have a broken elbow in a cast and had to trim them ;myself before seasoning them and have them put on the grill. Could have received a better deal at Omaha steaks.

Politics at Publix
I work for an inventory company that does Publix inventories (full and partial). From what I see the management is clueless on how to actually run a store the only thing they care about is making themselves and their numbers look good. I have had managers ask for a section of aisle that I just counted accurately and to the best of my ability (given the fact that their shelves are so jammed packed and so close together that it is nearly impossible to count) come back and say they I completely screwed up and that they want it recounted. All they do is look at their variance reports and if those are wrong it is automatically assumed that it is my fault. They never even think of the other multitude of factors that it could be. Not knowing which employees are full time and part time, I cannot make a distinction of which ones are worse all I know is that throughout the many inventories I have done for them the majority of employees are very arrogant towards me as if working in retail grocery is so above working in inventory.

Do they really care about the worker
Retail is the public's social scapegoat. If you're 30 years old, 'still' in retail, then people will tell you "you should have gone to college" or some similar remark -- as though one has only worked hard enough to scan groceries. If the above person went to college, the job would still exist -- and then the next person to occupy it would likely complain... and so nothing changes. So what the public suggests in this "should have worked harder" commentary is that if you are in retail, and you personally find it objectionable, then you have wither been lazy / unambitious in your life... It's really a way of saying "I don't care" and ignoring the social problems inherent in these kinds of jobs, while at the same time insinuating "I'm better than you" from the person that utters it. The situation with myself is that I have a form of Autism, and I found that schooling did not mesh well into my 'operating system.' Schooling was such a terrible experience for me. I had the ambition. I love to learn. Yet, the methods used did not play to my strengths. (And, I am certainly not alone in this story.).. So, whenever I hear the ignorant "well, you should have gone to college" remark, it's actually rather offensive on a personal level. I think there are many people who can relate to this - who have some kind of mental "difference" that is incongruous with society. These people get sifted out and end up in retail, only to deal with ignorant public commentary. There a whole phenomenon going on here -

Being treated like i don't matter
Since management and full timers only make up 20 percent then we are the other 80 percent who are being abused. It's time to strike and walk off the job. But we need to do it in large numbers else it will be for nothing. Besides what do we have to fear? losing a job that is killing us emotionally and physically, plus ruining our chances of ever being employed again by anyone else because we have been labeled as being so stupid as to work for Publix. Publix has ruined us. They need to pay.

smokers
Because by law I'm allowed to take a ten minute break for every two hours standing. If you worked in the deli at my publix and smoked you would want your breaks too. Prick.

I think the OP is suggesting workers taking smoke breaks like every hour. The OP looks like they work at Publix as well. This is like where I work and I don't work at Publix,

Check Cashing
What does the little asterisk on the sign say? When they say UP TO there is a disclaimer that has more info. By the way, Publix is a private business and they are not required to cash your check at all. They can refuse you service for any reason. Next time, get a bank account.
