SEARS (via private vendors) home service repair
SEARS Customer Service Manager 23 July 2018
I’m writing in hopes someone in the SEARS organization will investigate this episode. I’ve been a SEARS customer for over 40 years, My Mother was a Division Manager in the Newport News store for over 35 years. These non-SEARS vendors are really destroying the reputation and creditability that SEARS stood for, but no longer represents.
The first technician pulled the front panel off the washer saw the broken belt and residue on the floor of the washer and determined with purely visual look within 20 seconds the transmission was leaking and had to be replaced he opened his computer and got part numbers list price $400 however if I purchased the appliance warranty they would reduce t to half price, $202.47 so I agreed to purchase it. The person at the parts place/ warranty subscription took the data and explained I had a month to cancel should I choose to but them it would be the 400-dollar price, plus 99-dollar service call.
On July 11th, the second team arrived late and again with the same visual inspection determined I needed a new water pump and shock mounts for another $105. He recommended I cancel the service and just buy a new washer. He said I would have to pay another $99 to cover his assistants time! Assistant just looked on and followed the other guy around. This team took the parts shipped from the company ($202.47) in value and left.
It appears all these technicians are independent of SEARS and have no loyalty to the brand.
The person they were speaking with was aware they were taking the parts still in the boxes. To date the charge of $202.47 is on my card, but under protest with CHASE whom I’ve provided this entire scenario of events. I’m considering filing with the consumer product services commission to expose these non-sears vendors but thought I’d give you the opportunity to fix your problem in house.
Once the service policy was cancelled they wouldn’t provide me any data, because I didn’t have a service repair contract! You also need to ensure they are fluent in English!
Seemed to me to be a bit fly by night.
I am an electrical and mechanical engineer trained by the Air Force Institute of Technology, I looked over the transmission and water pump and found no signs of problems, I purchased a drive belt and drum mounting stabilizers, spent 15 minutes and put the parts on ran the washer and it functions as before, no leaks or noise. The residue and oily substance on the floor was the drive belt deterioration of the drive belt, had they touched it they would have seen that. Also, I examined the transmission for signs of any leakage and there were none, it performs its functions smoothly and without any noise. So, I’m of the opinion their whole visual routine is a scam and constitutes consumer fraud. I’m confident there are others who totally rely on the expertise and integrity of these personnel who are being or have been sold unnecessary parts.
